Days Offered: Every Wednesday for Middle School / Every Monday for Elementary for (2 semesters)

Time Offered:

Middle School Beginner Level 1– 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Middle School Beginner Level 2 – 1:00 – 2:00p.m (Click here to see the prerequisites)

ELEMENTARY CLASSES (All classes will be between 45-60 minutes)

Elementary Level 1 10:30 am – 11:30am

Elementary Beginner Level 2 -1:00- 2 p.m.

Term Offered: Semester 2020 & 2021

Target Audience: Elementary 2nd-5th grade / Middle School 6th– 8th grade

Number of Spots: 10 per class

*Classes are 4 weeks each month starting September 9 and ending December 9 (November & December are combined as one month) Classes will continue in the second semester as well. More details to come.

Supply Fee: $10 per semester

Course Description:

Spanish I is a broad based course designed to introduce the student to all aspects of foreign language study. Grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills are included. Cultural information is provided and taught throughout the duration of the course. Students will do research on various cultural topics. This is achieved by groups, partners and individual practice dependent on the subject. Emphasis is placed on conversation, vocabulary and correct usage of the language. Correct pronunciation and oral proficiency are primary goals. This requires a daily emphasis on listening and speaking. The classroom experience will provide an appreciation and development of cultural awareness through various readings, media resources and authentic materials.

Course Objectives:

  • Communication: Students will communicate in Spanish.
    1. Apply the use of verbs in the present, present progressive and past.
    2. Students will compare and contrast.
    3. Students will give their viewpoints on a variety of every-day topics.
  • Cultures: Students will gain knowledge and understanding of Spanish culture.
    1. Students will investigate the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
    2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of here and there.
  • Connections: Students will connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
    1. Students will discuss the significant contributions of Hispanic people and cultures.
    2. Identify principal cities and geographical features of the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Comparisons: Students will develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
    1. Students will compare and contrast various aspects of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
    2. Students will compare Spanish grammar to English grammar.
  • Communities: Students will participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.
    1. Students will communicate on a personal level with speakers of the language in the community such as restaurants, stores, community centers etc…

Overview

Each class will focus on comprehending conversational and basic Spanish skills by implementing basic foreign language fundamentals in a nontraditional learning environment. Students will learn real – world applications of Spanish. This will be accomplished through games, songs, and many other interactive activities. Interaction, listening, reading, speaking and team building skills are just a few skills that will be developed with this program.

Objectives

  • Be able to understand and communicate all forms of greetings in Spanish, useful phrases and basic survival phrases.
  • Have a basic vocabulary covering verbs(er, ir, ar) emotions, likes dislikes, and courtesy expressions.
  • Recognize and know what definite articles to use.
  • Comprehend and communicate basic survival and urgent phrases
  • Learn their colors, alphabet, counting from 0 -100, telephone number exchange and age exchange in Spanish.
  • Identify and interpret family members, body parts, people, food items, calendar months, days of the week, seasons in Spanish.
  • Experience cultural aspects from different Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Focus on teamwork, building bonds and friendships.

  • Parents will need to download the Class Dojo App on your phone.
  • I will send you an invite to join the class.

Homework Policy – Homework is due at the beginning of class every Wednesday.

Spanish 2 Pre-Requisites

Eligibility:

Middle School Beginner Spanish 2 Prerequisites are as follows:

  • Students should be able to converse using greeting and introduction expressions.
  • Students should be able to express likes and dislikes using gusta/gustan expressions.
  • Students should be able to recognize and recite the Spanish Alphabet.
  • Students should be familiar with subject pronouns (ex: yo, tu, nosotros) in Spanish and use them in context.
  • Students should be familiar with ar, verbs (ex: caminar, bailar).
  • Students should know:
  • some Farewell expressions
  • the difference between the two ways of saying “you” in Spanish (tu vs. usted,) and when to use each one
  • how to use question words in Spanish
  • know their colors in Spanish
  • calendar vocabulary: days and months
  • numbers 1-75

Elementary School Beginner Spanish 2 Prerequisites are as follows:

  • Students should be able to converse using greeting and introduction expressions.
  • Students should be familiar with some ar, verbs (ex: caminar, bailar).
  • Students should be able to recognize and recite the Spanish Alphabet.
  • Students should know:
  • some Farewell expressions
  • some colors in Spanish
  • calendar vocabulary: days, months
  • how to use question words in Spanish
  • numbers 1-40 in Spanish

Calendar: Note classes are scheduled to run up to 12 Weeks
